City of Calgary Strong Neighbourhood Int. Update

Acadia Strong Neighbourhood Initiative
Update-May 2012

From Viviana Reinberg, City of Calgary

(Sorry Everyone - this update looks much better in an email - please email Viviana if you would like her to email it to you - Corinne.)

The Strong neighbourhood Initiative (SNI) is a way of supporting residents to further strengthen their community’s economic, social, and environmental well-being.  It may involve increasing social contacts, enhancing opportunities or seeking better supports for children and families.  We support residents in identifying priorities and projects they want to undertake.
Here is a list of activities and projects which residents are involved in:
  • A resident’s group
People coming together to discuss issues and identify areas they would like to become involved in.  This group is providing direction to SNI staff and participating in the various activities listed below.
We welcome new participants to this group so please let us know if you are able to join us. Contact Tamara 403-537-7582 or Viviana 403-537-7596
  • Jane’s Neighbourhood Walks
Guided walks organized by The Calgary Foundation in Calgary. A resident from Acadia volunteered to do the Acadia walk which took place May 5th and was entitled: “Acadia: Past, Present & Future”. Further information: http://www.thecalgaryfoundation.org/ne_upcomingevents.htm
  • A Traffic Committee
This group is being revived.  If you have traffic concerns in Acadia or would like to help please contact Keith 403-862-1589
  • A Community Garden Committee
Development of a garden on the grounds of the community association.  If you would like to assist please contact Patricia pdfair@telus.net  or Linda 403-270-841.
  • Youth Action Group
Creation of a youth group where youth identify issues important to them on which they would like to take action.  Youth from 13 to 17 are welcome!
Contact Karla, 403- 537-7597

Other ideas on the table…
  • Multi-age, Multi-purpose Playground.
  • Seniors Outreach
  • A Cultural Event
An event showcasing talents, contributions. “Our Acadia, our Culture”?

Emerging Themes
(From conversations at residents’ gatherings)
  • Attend to the diversity in Acadia: needs of immigrants/newcomers.
  • Needs of families with  young children
  • Accessibility of services- collaborative promotion of existing services/programs
  • Better use of existing physical spaces

The residents group will be looking at these ideas and others that may emerge through the conversation.  Let us know your thoughts around these and/or if you can assist with the organizing of one of them

We continue our efforts to engage residents from Acadia in a variety of ways. The idea is to let people know about SNI and find ways in which they can participate in making Acadia the type of community they envision for their future. Here is a list of activities we are presently working on:
  • An information session
This is to report back to the community on the findings from the 620 residents who responded to the survey last year.  It’s expected that this will take place in the fall.
  • Engaging residents from high density areas
We continue having conversations with residents at townhouses and apartment complexes to make sure everybody’s voice is included, and to give the opportunity to participate in the Acadia SNI. If you live in one of these areas or you can get a group of residents together, we would love to hear from you so that we can look at ways of organizing some type of small scale conversation.
  • Supporting the residents and youth group
We’ll provide information, support in whatever areas they identify for moving forward.
  • Encouraging residents to organize block parties
These are a great way to build neighbourliness and a sense of community. We provide information and support to make these happen.
  • Supporting  and promoting new initiatives
We will support the development of social and/or economic initiatives that bring about increased awareness of social issues and/or actions to improve social conditions.
We need your assistance in promoting these initiatives within the community.  We hope you find this update helpful.
Sincerely,
Viviana Reinberg and Tamara Baldwin

Kirk Anderson presentation - urban beekeeping
Saturday March 17th, 2012
5:00pm - 9:00pm
Calgary Canoe Club, 6446 Crowchild Trail SW
Pay what you want
Please bring a potluck item and your own coffee/tea mug

The goal of the event is the same as before:

Kirk Andersons presentation begins with a rich storytelling of the birth and life of Backwards Beekeepers in Los Angeles, and more recently NYC, and all the projects it has inspired over the years. Kirks great sense of humor mixes in anecdotes, principles of practice as a community group, and examples of success in practice through-out the presentation. Backwards Beekeepers offering of educational opportunities, mentorship and collaboration with families and community groups has progressed in to becoming one of the largest urban beekeeping communities in North America. Kirk will share stories of these projects by sharing photos and videos highlighting projects taken on by different members of the LA beekeeping community. Eliese Watson of Apiaries and Bees for Communities will share her template, 6 Steps to Building the Hive Mentality. These steps will aid in guiding the goals of the conversation.  By now everyone’s imaginations are stimulated and projects for their own communities start forming. People are free to ask questions, and tangents are very likely realized by the end of the seminar.

Like a magic switch is turned on, people’s inner ‘villagers’ come alive and the best thing to do here is to put them into small groups and stick crayons in their hands!

There are a number of simple exercises we can offer but at this point people generally know what they want to do and self-govern. We finish things off with some action planning and next steps.

The goal of this event is to have the community of beekeepers formulate a plan for swarm catching throughout the summer coordinated with the advice of Kirks experience. The more people who attend the better! Trust Me! from Info@backyardbees.ca

This email was sent out to people that came out to the information gathering sessions.  For anyone that has not yet participated, please contact Viviana and Tamara if you would like to get involved.  Please help get the word out to all your Acadia Friends and Neighbours ;)

If you participated in the Oct/Nov sessions, but did not receive this email....please reply to Viviana and Tamara below;)

Dear Acadia Resident:
We thank you for your participation at the resident gathering of October-November 2011.  By now, you would have received an update about the Strong Neighbourhood Initiative in Acadia;  and as mentioned in that email, we are planning the next steps.
As an immediate action, we would like to meet with people like yourself who are familiar with the initiative and have already participated in a first gathering to express views about Acadia. At this time, we would like to take the conversation a bit deeper and go further than the physical aspects of the community.
As one of the people who expressed an interest in moving forward, we would like to invite you to participate in a conversation cafĂ© for February 29th from 6 to 8 pm.  At this event, we are asking you to have a conversation based on the following question:
In order to leave a legacy for future generations, we need,  we need to have more conversations about….”.
This time around there will be plenty of opportunity for dialogue and by the end of the session we are hoping that people will identify an area they would like to move forward on.  This might be the first step towards some type of action oriented group.
In order to determine the best location for the size of the group, and prepare for food; we are requesting that you RSVP by February 16th.  If you need to bring your children to the gathering please let us know and we might be able to offer some type of on-site care.
Thank you again for your interest in this initiative and your desire to make Acadia a better community for everybody.
Sincerely,
Tamara Baldwin

Email from the City of Calgary that was sent with Survey results in previous post

Dear Resident of Acadia:

Thank you very much for your interest in the Strong Neighbourhood Initiative. Some of you participated in a resident gathering in October-November of 2011 where we provided more specific information about this initiative. To those of you who did, we thank you for your time and input.   As promised at the gathering, this letter is to update you on the Strong Neighbourhood activities and let you know about the next steps.

At the gatherings, we presented residents with the information collected through brief surveys, graffiti walls (residents writing ideas on paper attached to a wall) and previous resident gatherings; and participants had a chance to build upon what others offered. In terms of information, we collected everybody’s ideas and have provided you with an updated version of them.  Some of these ideas are related to living within a geographic area such as outdoor recreational activities and facilities, high level of traffic, amenities, etc. Be assured that we will make sure that all these concerns are kept in mind as we progress forward. At the gatherings, it was apparent that people enjoyed meeting neighbours and had a good time engaging in conversation with them. We will keep this in mind by allowing time for socializing in our future plans.

As next steps, we will be hosting a meeting with those people who expressed an interest in taking the initial ideas further. At the same time, we will continue meeting with residents who don’t know about the initiative by having smaller scale gatherings at different locations in Acadia.

Another piece of update is about the surveys. Last fall, we were busy collecting a total of 613 surveys both in-person and on-line. Five people were the lucky winners to gift cards from the names of those entered for survey prizes. We will be letting you and the rest of the community know about the results of the surveys when the compilation of the data is completed.

We will be in touch with you to let you know about new developments and concrete initiatives that people might be interested in pursuing. In the meantime, you can find information about SNI at:

Thank you again for your participation and ideas.
